Overclocking

Overclocking greatly varies due to what hardware is being used and who is doing the overclocking. Always remember that no two pieces of hardware will perform the same, so our results will differ from what you might be able to get.

With stock BIOS settings, the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor runs with a 200MHz bus speed and an x17.0 multiplier that is used to reach the final core clock of 3.4GHz.

Since the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor is multiplier unlocked, we raised the multiplier without changing any settings in the BIOS just to see how high we could get with 'AUTO' voltages. With the system running the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 heat sink (air cooling) we were able to reach 4GHz with ease.

By manually increasing the voltage on the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor to 1.45V, we were able to reach 4.1GHz with full stability.

With the CPU voltage increased to 1.475V in the BIOS, we were able to hit 4.2GHz after raising the multiplier up to x21 from x17. This is an overclock of 800MHz, which is a great overclock for using air cooling. It seems both of these processors love to be overclocked and we were able to get nearly 1GHz overclocks with air cooling! This is about 300MHz higher than we got the Phenom II X4 955 processor when we reviewed it a few months ago.
